Tenable holds #1 in device vulnerability management, eighth year
Tenable has retained the top spot in the worldwide device vulnerability and exposure management market for the eighth consecutive year, according to IDC's August 2026 market shares report. The Columbia, Maryland-listed vendor held a 24.6% share, a position IDC describes as placing it nearly $260 million ahead of its closest competitor in revenue terms.
The finding comes as enterprise security teams face mounting pressure to shift from counting vulnerabilities to demonstrating measurable risk reduction. IDC VP of Research Michelle Abraham said boards, insurers and regulators are increasingly demanding that security programmes show how much risk remains after remediation, not simply how many CVEs were patched.
Platform advances
Tenable attributes its sustained market position to a series of platform enhancements delivered in recent months. The company has introduced what it calls always-on autonomous capabilities inside Hexa AI, an agentic reasoning engine embedded in the Tenable One platform. It has also broadened Tenable One's AI exposure coverage to span all major AI platforms and developer toolchains, and extended the platform into application security environments.
The company additionally announced the availability of Claude Mythos 5 within Tenable One, and said it is collaborating with both OpenAI and Anthropic through their respective defence-orientated programmes. Tenable did not disclose the commercial terms of those arrangements or publish independent benchmark results demonstrating the performance uplift from these integrations.
Co-chief executive Mark Thurmond said eight consecutive years of leadership reflect the company's commitment to continuous innovation. "We're empowering customers to transform their organisation's defence for the AI era by equipping them with the comprehensive visibility, advanced analytics and AI technology required to outpace today's adversaries," he said.
Market context
The device vulnerability and exposure management category has expanded well beyond its origins in network-scanner tooling, absorbing cloud security posture management, attack-surface management and, more recently, AI-risk visibility. Tenable competes in overlapping segments against Qualys, Rapid7 and CrowdStrike's Falcon platform, as well as specialist exposure-management vendors that have attracted significant venture backing over the past two years.
Regulatory momentum is adding urgency to the sector. The EU's NIS2 Directive, which came into force for member states in late 2024, requires organisations operating essential services to demonstrate active vulnerability management programmes. The UK Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, under consultation in 2026, points toward similarly prescriptive requirements. In the US, SEC cyber-disclosure rules and CISA's Secure by Design initiative are nudging boards to treat exposure data as a governance-level concern rather than a purely technical one.
Tenable serves more than 40,000 customers globally and is publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker TENB.
