Innosphere names 16 startups to NSF-backed ARID and SHIELD cohorts
Innosphere, the Colorado-based nonprofit venture development organisation that leads the National Science Foundation's ASCEND Engine, has announced the 16 companies selected for its ARID and SHIELD accelerator cohorts. The two programmes sit within the NSF's Regional Innovation Engine initiative and address two distinct environmental technology verticals: wildfire risk and grid resilience (ARID), and soil health, adaptive grazing, and water-quality management (SHIELD).
Ten companies join the ARID cohort and six the SHIELD cohort. Both run for eight months, targeting startups at Technology Readiness Level 6 or higher, and offer access to real-world testbeds across Colorado and Wyoming. Each cohort makes $150,000 in cash prizes available, structured as $80,000 for first place, $50,000 for second, and $20,000 for third.
The cohorts
The ARID lineup reads as a cross-section of the emerging wildfire-intelligence stack. Several companies apply satellite imagery and AI to early detection: Deepfire clusters data from 14 satellites and, according to the company, has beaten the first 911 call by up to two hours in field detections; Satellites on Fire operates across 13-plus satellites with a five-minute refresh rate and pushes alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, email, or API to 21 countries. Geofire Labs and Omnigeo take a property-level risk-intelligence angle, using satellite imagery and computer vision to identify high-risk vegetation along utility powerlines and deliver insurer-grade wildfire risk scores. Aftermath Research adds a post-event layer, applying synthetic aperture radar to map fire damage through smoke. Hardware-side, Nostera deploys roadside sensor nodes to screen vehicles for pre-ignition hazards such as dragging chains and overheated brakes, while WatchPost installs micro weather stations directly onto utility infrastructure.
The SHIELD cohort focuses on agricultural and watershed data. BioSensor Solutions uses printed, low-cost sensors to measure soil biological activity in real time, pairing the hardware with an AI forecasting platform. Nave Analytics does away with in-field hardware entirely, fusing satellite data and hydrologic modelling to deliver root-zone soil moisture and drought-risk intelligence. Agroptics targets irrigation efficiency, claiming water-use reductions of up to 15% through real-time remote sensing and weather forecasting. PAGE Technologies and E-Flux round out the cohort with sensor analytics and environmental measurement services respectively, while BioStamp addresses biological IP protection through DNA barcoding of engineered microorganisms.
Bud Michael, Client Director at Innosphere, said the 16 companies were "building the tools we need to manage wildfire risk and protect soil and water resources," adding that the TIME recognition was a reminder the commercialisation platform behind them was "one of the best in the country."
Market and regulatory context
The wildfire-technology market has expanded sharply as insurers pull back coverage in high-risk western US states and utilities face mounting regulatory pressure over equipment-ignition liability. Satellite-based early detection and vegetation-risk mapping are attracting both venture capital and utility procurement budgets, placing ARID cohort companies in a competitive but fast-growing category alongside established remote-sensing vendors and a growing field of climate-tech startups.
On the regulatory side, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state public utilities commissions have increased scrutiny of utility wildfire mitigation plans, creating a direct compliance driver for grid-resilience tools. For the agricultural cohort, the USDA's push to expand conservation programmes linked to soil-health metrics provides a policy tailwind for companies such as BioSensor Solutions and Nave Analytics.
Innosphere cited NSF ASCEND Engine projections, sourced from the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, of $3 billion in regional GDP impact, 18,000 new jobs, and $2 billion in capital raised by 2034. Earlier this month, TIME named Innosphere to its 2026 list of America's Best Incubators and Accelerators, evaluated on founder experience, portfolio track record, and investor endorsements.
