Himax launches eDP TDDI chip for large-format automotive displays

Himax's HX83196/HX83197 series integrates touch, display driver and eDP interface in a single chip, supporting automotive screens up to 30 inches at 6K

Himax Technologies has unveiled its HX83196/HX83197 eDP TDDI series, a family of automotive display driver ICs that consolidate a high-speed eDP interface, touch controller, and display driver into a single chip. The Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company says the product targets the growing appetite for large, high-resolution displays inside next-generation vehicle cabins.

The new chip supports displays up to 17 inches at 3K resolution in a single-chip configuration, scaling to 30 inches at 6K resolution when two devices are cascaded using the company's eSRE (eDP Stream Regeneration Engine) technology. The HX83197 variant additionally incorporates local dimming functionality, removing the need for a separate timing controller IC and, the company says, improving contrast while reducing system bill-of-materials cost. Both devices feature 2,560 source channels and 1,280 touch channels, with refresh rates of 60Hz and 90Hz. Himax confirmed that multiple panel-maker design-in projects are already underway.

Technical differentiation

The integration of an eDP 1.2 and eDP 1.4 interface directly into the TDDI eliminates the eDP-to-OLDI bridge IC that conventional automotive display architectures require. For single-display setups, the chip supports a Direct DP mode, allowing the host SoC to feed eDP signals over a single cable without an additional SerDes component. Himax says this simplifies wiring and reduces electromagnetic interference risk, a meaningful concern in vehicles where display cabling runs close to safety-critical systems.

HDR10+ support and Display Stream Compression (DSC) are included, reducing transmission bit rate at high resolutions while preserving image fidelity. The chip also supports an ambient light sensor interface positioned directly on the panel rather than in the bezel, enabling slimmer display bezels that align with current automotive interior design trends.

Ming-Cheng Chiu, Executive Vice President of Himax's Touch and Display Business Unit, said the company has been active in automotive display ICs for nearly two decades and described the eDP TDDI as a response to a market trend toward "larger, higher-resolution displays and increasingly diverse display configurations in smart car interiors."

Market context

Automotive display silicon is one of the faster-growing segments within the broader display driver IC market. Cabin displays are consolidating into larger, multi-zone arrangements, with some vehicle programmes now combining instrument cluster, centre stack, and passenger-side screens into continuous panel assemblies. This architectural shift creates demand precisely for the kind of high-bandwidth, cascadable display driver that Himax is positioning here.

Himax competes in this segment against Novatek Microelectronics, Synaptics, and a number of Japanese and Korean IC vendors, as well as in-house display IC teams at large automotive Tier 1 suppliers. Its claimed advantage rests on vertical integration of touch and display functions at scale, backed by an automotive IC patent portfolio the company reports has exceeded 2,500 granted patents globally as of mid-2026.

The automotive semiconductor market is also subject to increasingly rigorous functional safety standards. Automotive-grade ICs must typically achieve ISO 26262 ASIL certification at various levels depending on the display's role in the driver interface. Himax did not disclose functional safety certification status for the HX83196/HX83197 in this release, which will be a key question for Tier 1 customers conducting design-in evaluations.

The new eDP TDDI will be exhibited at the SID Vehicle Displays and Interfaces Symposium in Detroit. Design-in wins and production ramp timing will be the near-term indicators of commercial traction for a product that, for now, remains at the pre-production stage.
