Nokia launches Cognitive Operations edge-AI platform for mining

Nokia's Cognitive Operations platform unifies mission-critical comms, edge computing and operational AI for mining, public safety and defence customers.

Nokia has launched Cognitive Operations (CO), a field-deployable platform that brings together mission-critical communications, accelerated edge computing, and operational AI into a single integrated system. Initially targeting mining, public safety, and defence organisations, the platform is available now and can be deployed on-premises or via the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

At the hardware core of the platform sits the Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), a ruggedised compute and networking unit with embedded GPU-accelerated processing. The CEN is designed to push intelligence directly into vehicles, remote sites, and forward-deployed assets, rather than routing data back to a central cloud for analysis. Nokia has partnered with Rajant Corporation to integrate Rajant's InstaMesh wireless networking technology into the node, aiming to eliminate single points of access failure in contested or degraded environments.

Three vertical applications

Nokia is launching CO with three distinct vertical configurations. The mining edition is the company's flagship offering for the sector, incorporating a live 3D digital twin of site operations, predictive maintenance, real-time video analytics, and autonomous safety monitoring. It is also the first vertical available through the Azure Marketplace, which the company says allows operators to deploy in days rather than weeks.

For public safety, CO introduces what Nokia terms the "Vehicle as a Node" concept: each emergency vehicle equipped with a CEN becomes an autonomous intelligence and communications node. Police cars, fire engines, and ambulances self-organise into a distributed field network at an incident scene, sharing a live situational picture over 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite without depending on a fixed base station.

The defence edition extends the same architecture to the battlefield edge. Vehicles, units, and forward assets form a secure, self-organising tactical network capable of sensor fusion, video analytics, and threat detection on-device, with communications maintained across 5G, tactical radio, and satellite links in electronically contested environments.

"This launch is a defining step in Nokia's promise to deliver connected intelligence," said Lelio Di Martino, General Manager of Cognitive Operations for Nokia. "Our Cognitive Operations solution extends AI directly into the field, enabling real-time intelligence where physical operations happen."

Market context and competitive landscape

Nokia is pushing CO into a market where a number of specialist vendors and larger platform players are converging on similar territory. Industrial edge AI, combining ruggedised compute with private wireless and operational technology integration, has attracted investment from Ericsson, Siemens, Honeywell, and a range of well-funded startups targeting sectors such as mining, logistics, and utilities. The differentiation Nokia is asserting lies in the depth of vertical integration: a single vendor providing the radio network, the edge compute node, the AI inference stack, and the digital twin layer, rather than requiring operators to integrate components from separate suppliers.

The Azure Marketplace listing is strategically significant. It positions CO within enterprise procurement workflows that many large mining and utilities operators already use, shortening sales cycles and lowering the integration burden for IT teams.

From a regulatory standpoint, deployments in public safety and defence will attract scrutiny under procurement frameworks such as NATO's STANAG standards, UK Ministry of Defence digital acquisition policy, and, for European deployments, NIS2 obligations covering critical infrastructure operators. Nokia did not disclose which defence or public safety agencies are acting as launch customers, nor whether any contracts have been signed. Investors and enterprise buyers will be looking for named customer wins and independently verified performance benchmarks as the platform matures beyond its launch announcement.
