Kratos Defense and Security Solutions has confirmed the successful deployment of its Aegis Readiness Assessment Vehicle Type B (ARAV-B) ballistic missile target during Pacific Dragon 2026, a biennial multinational ballistic missile defence exercise led by the US 3rd Fleet. The vehicle was launched on 6 August from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii, the opening day of an exercise that ran until 15 August across the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.

The Pacific Dragon 2026 exercise brought together forces from the United States, Australia, Chile, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Spain, working in conjunction with the US Missile Defense Agency. Its stated objective was to advance allied and partner capability to track and intercept ballistic missiles jointly, combining coordinated missile defence operations with tactical data-link information sharing across participating fleets. The exercise specifically evaluated the Baseline 10 combat system and AN/SPY-6 radar fitted to the USS Jack H. Lucas.

The vehicle and its record

The ARAV-B is a two-stage, spin-stabilised target vehicle built around Kratos' commercially developed Oriole rocket motor as the upper stage. The platform sits within the broader ARAV family of configurable short- and medium-range ballistic missile targets, which also includes the two-stage Type C and the three-stage Terrier-Terrier-Oriole configuration. The Pacific Dragon 2026 mission marked the 43rd successful target flight for the ARAV-B, supporting programmes run by the Naval Surface Warfare Center and the Missile Defense Agency.

Dave Carter, President of the Kratos Defense and Rocket Support Services Division, said the launch "highlights our team's ability to rapidly develop and field affordable, threat-representative systems" and underscored the importance of testing advanced combat platforms against realistic, demanding scenarios.

Beyond the ARAV family, Kratos also develops the larger Zeus family of rocket systems and the Erinyes hypersonic testbed vehicle. The company says its systems can be reconfigured for missions including low-apogee and long-duration hypersonic testing at speeds exceeding Mach 10.

Market and competitive context

Ballistic missile defence target systems occupy a narrow but strategically significant niche within the broader defence-technology supply chain. The market is driven almost entirely by government procurement and allied interoperability requirements, with demand closely tied to geopolitical threat assessments in the Indo-Pacific and European theatres. Kratos competes in this space against a small number of established defence primes as well as specialist aerospace firms; its stated competitive positioning centres on affordability and speed to field, rather than the high-unit-cost development programmes typical of large prime contractors.

The Indo-Pacific focus of Pacific Dragon is consistent with a wider shift in US and allied missile defence investment. Japan and the Republic of Korea have each expanded their BMD procurement in recent years, and Australia's defence capability plans under the AUKUS partnership include enhanced missile-defence interoperability. Exercises such as Pacific Dragon serve a dual function: they test hardware under operationally representative conditions and generate the performance data that procurement agencies use to justify continued programme investment.

Kratos is listed on NASDAQ under the ticker KTOS. The company did not disclose any new contract values or revenue figures associated with the Pacific Dragon 2026 participation.
