Ciphertex launches AI•S software-defined storage for AI data governance

Ciphertex has unveiled AI•S at DAFITC 2026, a platform offering centralised visibility and governance across hybrid enterprise storage environments.

Ciphertex Data Security has unveiled AI•S, a software-defined storage platform designed to give enterprises unified governance over data distributed across on-premise, edge and cloud environments. The product was announced on 24 August at DAFITC 2026 in Montgomery, Alabama, where Ciphertex is exhibiting through 26 August.

The platform addresses a problem that AI adoption has brought into sharper focus: as analytics and model-training workloads require access to larger data volumes, fragmented storage estates make it increasingly difficult to maintain consistent visibility, access controls and audit capability. Jerry Kaner, founder of Ciphertex Data Security, said the company treats discovery and control as inseparable challenges. "You can't secure what you don't know you have and you can't use what you can't find," he said.

What the platform does

AI•S applies role-based access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, audit trails, chain-of-custody records, digital fingerprinting and just-in-time integrity verification across heterogeneous storage architectures. It supports NVMe, SSD, HDD and LTO media, and allows organisations to keep data in existing repositories rather than consolidating into a single location. Policy-based lifecycle controls cover replication, migration, retention, versioning and deletion, while write-once, read-many and immutable storage options are intended to protect forensic and compliance records from modification.

On the integration side, the platform connects with Windows Domain and LDAP directories and supports multifactor authentication via Google Authenticator without requiring internet connectivity, a requirement that points clearly at air-gapped or classified environments. Amazon S3 and Azure Blob Storage-compatible APIs, along with file system integration, allow cloud-native applications to interact with the storage layer without forcing data consolidation. AI•S is built into Ciphertex's existing SecureNAS portable and rackmount hardware as part of the RhinOS operating environment.

For data discovery, the platform provides metadata-rich object management with custom metadata models, indexing, full-text and parallel search, and what the company describes as AI-enhanced search for locating relevant content across distributed resources at scale.

Market context

The enterprise data-governance market has expanded rapidly as regulators and security teams alike demand clearer data lineage and access-control evidence. Ciphertex's positioning sits at the intersection of secure storage hardware and software-defined governance, a niche occupied by a mix of established players such as NetApp, Pure Storage and Cohesity on the platform side, and specialist secure-storage vendors serving defence and government verticals. The DAFITC venue is a reliable signal of the company's primary customer base: US defence, intelligence and federal civilian agencies, where air-gap capability and chain-of-custody audit trails are procurement requirements rather than optional features.

The broader software-defined storage market is under meaningful competitive pressure. Hyperscaler-native object stores and managed governance services from AWS, Azure and Google Cloud have lowered the barrier to entry for enterprise buyers who can accept cloud residency. Vendors targeting sensitive data in on-premise and edge deployments, as Ciphertex does, are therefore competing on trust, compliance posture and portability rather than price per terabyte.

Regulatory read-across

Ciphertex did not cite specific compliance frameworks in its announcement, but the feature set maps closely to requirements under the US Department of Defense's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, NIST SP 800-171 and, for civilian agencies, FedRAMP. Immutable audit trails and chain-of-custody controls are also directly relevant to organisations managing data under SEC or FINRA record-retention rules and, in the European context, GDPR data-lineage obligations. Whether AI•S carries any formal certification at launch was not stated in the release.

Ciphertex did not disclose pricing, customer names, or any performance benchmarks for the AI•S platform. The company said interested parties can discuss system requirements at Booth 466 at DAFITC 2026.
