ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 lands in Canada with RTX 5090 and 4K mini-LED
ASUS Republic of Gamers has brought its 2026 Strix SCAR 18 to Canada, positioning the 18-inch machine as its highest-performance gaming laptop to date. The RTX 5080 configuration went on sale via the ASUS Store on 11 August at C$6,899, with the flagship RTX 5090 model priced at C$8,499 and expected to follow at the end of the month.
The laptop pairs Intel's Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, a 24-core chip clocked up to 5.5GHz with a 36MB cache, with either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. Both graphics cards carry 175W maximum TGP under ROG Boost, and the overall system power envelope is rated at 320W sustained, up from 255W in the previous generation. The RTX 5090 variant ships with 24GB of GDDR7 memory; the RTX 5080 carries 16GB. Both configurations include 64GB of DDR5-6400 RAM, upgradeable to 128GB, and storage arranged in RAID 0 PCIe 4.0 NVMe pairs.
Display and cooling
The headline hardware feature is a panel ROG describes as the world's first 18-inch mini-LED display combining 4K resolution (3840x2400) with a 240Hz refresh rate. The panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space, achieves up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness across more than 2,000 dimming zones, and carries VESA ClearMR 11000 certification. ASUS also introduced what it calls ROG Nebula ELMB, a zone-based low-motion-blur technology that divides the screen into eight independent strobing zones rather than firing the entire panel at once. The company says this allows variable refresh rate support to be maintained simultaneously, which has historically been technically incompatible with conventional ELMB implementations.
Thermal management is central to sustaining the 320W power budget. The 2026 SCAR 18 uses a vapour chamber 20% thicker than the previous generation, 0.1mm copper fins producing a total heatsink surface area of approximately 247,000mm², and fans that ROG claims deliver 91% more airflow than the prior design. SSD bays receive a dedicated graphite-and-copper heatsink to handle the thermal demands of PCIe 5.0 storage. Connectivity is comprehensive: dual Thunderbolt 5 ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1, a 2.5G LAN port, and Wi-Fi 7.
Market context
The high-end gaming laptop segment is contested by a small number of brands willing to engineer around very large power envelopes. MSI's Titan GT77 line, Razer's Blade 18 and Lenovo's Legion Pro 9i occupy broadly the same tier, each constrained by the same thermal and battery physics. At 320W sustained system power, the SCAR 18 effectively operates as a desktop replacement that draws from a 450W external adapter, and its 90Wh battery is decorative under full load rather than a meaningful source of portable runtime.
The RTX 5090 Laptop GPU is the same Blackwell-generation part that NVIDIA began shipping in early 2026, and the inclusion of DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation is meaningful for frame-rate headroom at 4K. However, laptop GPU variants operate at substantially lower power limits than their desktop counterparts; buyers paying C$8,499 should assess benchmarks against the desktop RTX 5090 rather than assuming parity.
ASUS did not disclose independent benchmark results in its release, and the "world's first" display claim carries an April 2026 qualifying date based on the company's own survey of publicly available information. The SCAR 18 is primarily aimed at esports players and content creators who need a single portable workstation, a use case where the RTX 5090's GDDR7 bandwidth and the NPU in the Intel chip for local AI inferencing carry genuine differentiation over the previous generation.
