Firefly Aerospace acquires Space-ng to scale autonomous lunar software
Firefly Aerospace (Nasdaq: FLY) has acquired Space-ng Inc., a Littleton, Colorado-based developer of AI-powered vision navigation and autonomous guidance systems for spacecraft. The deal brings Space-ng's software, cameras and onboard compute hardware fully under the Firefly brand, and sees Space-ng co-founder and chief executive Ethan Rublee join the company as Chief Engineer of Software.
The transaction has no disclosed financial terms. J.P. Morgan Securities acted as exclusive financial adviser to Firefly.
The technology
Space-ng's vision navigation software was already flight-proven before the acquisition closed. During Firefly's Blue Ghost Mission 1 earlier this year, the software determined position and attitude, identified hazardous terrain in real time and initiated two autonomous hazard-avoidance manoeuvres, culminating in a precision touchdown in Mare Crisium. That made Firefly the first commercial operator to achieve a successful soft landing on the Moon.
Beyond lunar descent, the technology supports rendezvous and proximity operations, docking, and space domain awareness without reliance on GPS or GNSS signals. That capability is increasingly significant for both civil and defence customers operating beyond low Earth orbit, where satellite-navigation infrastructure does not exist.
Jason Kim, Firefly's chief executive, said Space-ng's systems "proved themselves in the most critical moments of our descent, allowing Blue Ghost to autonomously perform two hazard avoidance manoeuvres and safely touch down on the Moon." Rublee described the acquisition as an opportunity to "scale Space-ng's products and apply them across Firefly's exciting vehicle line and mission roadmap."
Space-ng was founded in 2024 as a spin-off from Farm-ng, which had been developing AI vision and robotics for precision agriculture since 2020. The agricultural lineage is notable: computer-vision pipelines built for unstructured outdoor environments share meaningful architecture with the perception stacks needed for terrain-relative navigation on airless bodies.
Market context and competitive landscape
Autonomous guidance for deep-space and cislunar missions is a rapidly expanding segment, driven by the volume of planned government and commercial lunar activity over the next decade. NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services programme, under which Firefly holds contracts for three additional missions, and the agency's MoonFall initiative represent a sustained pipeline. The Defence Innovation Unit has also contracted Firefly for a space domain awareness mission, signalling growing appetite for commercial autonomous systems in national-security applications.
Firefly competes broadly with Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines and ispace in commercial lunar services. On the software and autonomy side, companies including Astrobotic's subsidiary and a number of well-funded deep-tech startups are developing rival perception and navigation stacks. Bringing Space-ng in-house allows Firefly to own a critical enabling technology rather than depend on third-party licensing, which matters for mission assurance on high-profile defence contracts where supply-chain control is a procurement concern.
The acquisition also reflects a wider industry trend: launch and lander operators are vertically integrating software autonomy capabilities as mission cadences increase and the economics of hiring specialist third parties become harder to justify at scale.
Regulatory and standards considerations
Operations under NASA's CLPS programme are subject to oversight by NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Commercial Space Transportation. The inclusion of a Defence Innovation Unit mission brings export-control obligations under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, which govern spacecraft autonomy software and certain imaging hardware. Firefly has not disclosed whether Space-ng's camera and compute products carry existing ITAR classifications, though this will be a standard due-diligence item for the integration team.
The company said it will continue offering Space-ng's capabilities to government and commercial customers under the Firefly Aerospace brand. Near-term milestones for investors and analysts to watch include the naming of payloads and launch schedules for the three additional CLPS missions, and any benchmarking data on the expanded autonomous software suite.
