HP Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI that will embed the latter's Frontier platform across the PC and printing giant's global operations. The deal, announced on 28 June 2026, covers customer-facing experiences, internal productivity, telemetry reporting and software development, making HP one of the first large-scale global enterprises to deploy Frontier at this breadth.

The partnership follows a four-month evaluation period that began in February 2026, during which HP piloted agentic capabilities, assessed security and governance controls, and tested enterprise integration. Having completed that assessment, HP has concluded that OpenAI offers what it describes as best-in-class models with a compelling agent-based roadmap, and the two companies will now co-develop future use cases against HP's own enterprise standards.

The deal

Prakash Arunkundrum, HP's chief strategy and transformation officer, said the company intends to build a more consistent experience across store, partner, chat and voice channels, giving customers and partners faster routes to resolution. "It reflects the ambition of our AI strategy to deliver real-world outcomes at scale," he said.

OpenAI chief revenue officer Denise Dresser characterised HP as an early mover that had already converted API and ChatGPT pilots into repeatable systems. "HP is showing what enterprise transformation looks like when AI becomes an operating layer, connected to the systems and workflows where work already happens," she said.

A named component of the deployment is HP's Workforce Experience Platform (WXP), which the company says was recognised as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Employee Experience Management Tools. WXP is positioned by HP as a single management layer for device fleets, and the partnership is intended to add a telemetry and AI-insights capability on top of that base. HP did not disclose contract value, revenue-share terms, or specific performance benchmarks tied to the rollout.

Market context

HP's move reflects a broader pattern of large hardware and device vendors seeking to embed AI at the software layer to defend against commoditisation pressure. Dell Technologies, Lenovo and Microsoft-allied OEMs have each announced AI-PC and agentic-workflow initiatives over the past 18 months, creating a competitive environment in which the AI software stack is increasingly the differentiation surface rather than the silicon underneath.

OpenAI's Frontier platform is itself a relatively new enterprise offering, competing with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service (Microsoft holds a major stake in OpenAI), Google Vertex AI, Anthropic's Claude for Enterprise, and a growing number of vertical AI vendors. For OpenAI, landing a named partnership with a Fortune 500 hardware incumbent of HP's scale provides a reference case as it expands its direct enterprise sales motion beyond API access.

The agentic AI framing in the announcement is worth scrutiny. Agentic systems that act autonomously across enterprise workflows carry governance and liability considerations that are still being worked through by regulators. The EU AI Act's provisions for high-risk automated decision-making systems will apply to deployments within the European Economic Area, and HP operates in more than 180 countries. HP's emphasis on data governance and security controls in the pilot phase suggests awareness of this regulatory surface, though no specific compliance certifications or third-party audit outcomes were disclosed.

For enterprise buyers watching HP's own digital transformation as a reference architecture, the milestones to watch are the first public case studies from the customer-facing deployment, WXP telemetry integration timelines, and any independent assessment of the productivity gains claimed as the rollout scales.
