Overland AI deploys ULTRA autonomous ground vehicles at African Lion
Overland AI sent two of its ULTRA autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) to African Lion 2026, US Africa Command's largest annual joint exercise, held at the Cap Draa Training Area in Morocco from 20 April to 8 May. The Seattle-based company says the platforms executed coordinated breaching, fire support, and defensive lane missions alongside US Army and Marine Corps units — one of the most operationally complex public demonstrations of autonomous ground combat systems to date.
The two ULTRAs were configured for distinct roles. One was equipped with a CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station) remote weapon system and provided cover fire during counter-attack scenarios; a second, integrated with an APOBS (Anti-Personnel Obstacle Breaching System), cleared concertina wire obstacles alongside dismounted Soldiers. In a separate defensive lane, a single ULTRA emplaced XM204 terrain-shaping munitions to establish an obstacle belt. Both vehicles navigated obstacle fields that included berms, tank walls, anti-vehicle ditches, and minefields.

Operational performance
Overland AI said its vehicles became fully operational within 24 hours of arrival in Morocco, a deployment-speed claim the company is positioning as a key differentiator for rapid-response scenarios. Soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 7th Engineer Brigade, and 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion received training on ULTRA operations. Operator feedback, as reported by Overland AI, indicated that the OverWatch command-and-control interface was the most intuitive robotic platform they had encountered, with personnel reportedly achieving independent mission planning and multi-vehicle tasking within hours. These claims come from the company's own release and were not independently verified.
Senior leaders from US Army Europe and Africa (USAEUR-AF) and AFRICOM observed live operations, lending the demonstration a degree of institutional visibility that may accelerate procurement conversations.
Market and competitive context
The autonomous ground vehicle market for defence applications is growing rapidly, with a number of well-funded startups and established prime contractors competing for US Army and allied-nation contracts. Programmes such as the Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) initiative have driven significant investment into purpose-built military autonomy stacks, distinct from the commercial autonomous-vehicle sector. Overland AI, founded in 2022, has positioned its OverDrive software stack as purpose-built for off-road and contested environments — a deliberate differentiation from road-optimised commercial autonomy systems that struggle with unstructured terrain.
The company competes in a space where engineering credibility is established through field demonstrations rather than benchmark leaderboards. Participation in a named, large-scale multinational exercise alongside active combat units — rather than a controlled vendor showcase — carries more procurement weight than laboratory results. Defence buyers will also scrutinise the programme's path to formal qualification under US Army safety and operational standards, which has historically been a significant bottleneck for novel robotic systems.

The demonstration of autonomous weapons-adjacent systems in a multinational exercise setting touches on a politically sensitive area: US export-control rules under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) govern the transfer of defence-related autonomous technologies to foreign partners. The involvement of international partners at African Lion — Morocco hosts the exercise and allied nations participate — means Overland AI's technology was operating in an environment that requires careful compliance management.
