Methode Electronics posts 10% revenue rise but widens net loss in Q1
Methode Electronics (NYSE: MEI) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 net sales of $265.4 million, up 10.4% from $240.5 million in the same period a year earlier. The Southfield, Michigan-based manufacturer credited the growth primarily to its Industrial segment, where revenues jumped 27% year-on-year to $156.8 million, fuelled by demand from data centre customers alongside on-highway and off-highway lighting products.
Despite the stronger top line, net loss widened to $11.4 million ($0.32 per diluted share) from $10.3 million ($0.29 per diluted share) in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EBITDA fell to $13.7 million, or 5.2% of net sales, from $15.7 million, or 6.5%, a year earlier. The company attributed the margin pressure to a sharp rise in selling and administrative expenses, which climbed to $45.9 million from $36.6 million, reflecting investments in talent and capabilities as well as higher professional fees. One-time costs related to last year's divestiture of its dataMate connector business also weighed on the result.
Industrial strength, automotive drag
The Industrial segment delivered income from operations of $31.6 million, a margin of 20.2%, up from $26.5 million a year earlier. The Automotive segment continued to lose money, posting an operating loss of $11.7 million on revenues of $105.7 million, though the loss narrowed slightly from $12.5 million in the prior-year period, reflecting improved operating performance in North America that partially offset weakness in EMEA and Asia.
The Interface segment, which is being wound down following the dataMate divestiture, shrank to $2.9 million in revenues from $10.9 million and swung to an operating loss of $0.8 million from income of $3.0 million.
President and chief executive Jon DeGaynor said the company booked new non-data centre awards worth $75 million of peak annual revenue, or roughly $400 million of lifetime revenue. "Our transformation is a multi-year effort, and progress won't always be linear," he said, "but I'm confident we have the right strategy and the right team in place to deliver sustainable, profitable growth."
Subsequent to the quarter end, Methode amended its revolving credit facility, extending certain maturities by one year to October 2028 while reducing the facility size from $400 million to $375 million. The company repaid a net $10.1 million of debt during the quarter; net debt stood at $194.3 million as of 1 August 2026.
Market context and outlook
Methode operates in a competitive and fragmented market for custom-engineered components. Its data centre exposure sits primarily in power distribution products such as busbars and battery disconnect units, a category that has benefited from the rapid build-out of AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. Rivals in this space include large diversified component groups as well as specialist busbar and power connectivity vendors, and the sector is currently characterised by strong demand and supply-chain investment.
The company's Automotive segment remains under pressure from softer EV take-rates and the structural decline in certain legacy interface programmes, a challenge shared across the tiered-supplier base. Tariff uncertainty linked to US trade policy and USMCA renegotiation risk is flagged as a material variable in Methode's guidance, which the company affirmed at $1,025 million to $1,075 million in net sales and $72 million to $82 million in adjusted EBITDA for the full fiscal 2027 year. Free cash flow swung to an outflow of $10.9 million from an inflow of $18.0 million a year earlier, partly a function of working-capital timing rather than structural deterioration, the company said. Investors will be focused on whether data centre momentum translates into margin recovery as one-time costs abate through the remainder of the year.
