Allego migrates 35,000-charger European network to AMPECO platform
Allego, one of Europe's largest public EV charging operators, has selected AMPECO as the charge point management system (CPMS) underpinning its next technology phase. The migration encompasses more than 35,000 charge points across 16 countries, over 60 roaming connections, approximately 200,000 registered drivers, and around 1.3 million charging sessions each month. Completion is targeted for Q4 2026.
The deal sees Allego hand off responsibility for the platform layer, standards compliance, hardware integration, and ongoing maintenance, to AMPECO, freeing the Dutch operator to concentrate on commercial differentiation and driver experience. AMPECO's platform is already deployed across more than 200 charging network operators in over 70 markets, and the company positions it as hardware-agnostic and API-first.
The deal
Christian Zeh, chief operating officer at Allego, said the company had found "a partner we can trust with the technology behind our network," adding that the move provides "a modern, future-proof platform" that allows Allego to focus on the charging experience rather than infrastructure management. Joost Groeneveld, Allego's director of network operations, cited scalability as the primary operational rationale.
Among the evaluation criteria, Allego assessed AMPECO's pace of product development, which the company attributes in part to AI-native engineering processes. AMPECO's built-in operations agent, CoOperator, applies AI to tasks including predictive fault detection, real-time diagnostics, root-cause analysis of failed sessions, and identification of offline chargers. Allego's stated post-migration priorities include grid-aware charging to manage network congestion, deeper commercial programmes with site-host partners, and AI-assisted driver-experience tools.
Market context
The CPMS market has matured considerably as European public charging infrastructure has scaled. Where early networks were built on bespoke or lightly adapted open-source stacks, operators of Allego's size now face genuine complexity: multi-country regulatory compliance, OCPP versioning, roaming interoperability via protocols such as OCPI and eMIP, and billing settlement across dozens of currencies and tax regimes. Specialist CPMS vendors have consolidated around this operational depth as the primary selling point, competing on integration breadth, uptime guarantees, and the speed at which new regulatory requirements can be absorbed.
Allego's migration is notable in scale. A 35,000-chargepoint estate with 1.3 million monthly sessions is a significant reference win for AMPECO and signals that the third-party CPMS model, where network operators outsource the software backbone entirely, is gaining acceptance at the top tier of the European market. Rival platform vendors and hyperscalers with EV-adjacent energy management products will note the signal.
Regulatory read-across
The European regulatory environment adds urgency to platform modernisation. The EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) imposes mandatory payment method requirements, minimum power thresholds, and price transparency obligations on public charge points, with compliance deadlines running from 2024 through 2027. Managing compliance across 16 jurisdictions simultaneously is precisely the kind of overhead that a capable third-party CPMS can absorb more efficiently than a bespoke in-house stack. Allego's explicit reference to regulatory compliance as an evaluation criterion suggests AFIR readiness was a material factor in the vendor selection. Grid-aware charging, also cited as a post-migration priority, aligns with emerging smart-charging obligations under the EU's Energy Efficiency Directive and national grid operator requirements in markets including the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK.
