Datalec Precision Installations welcomes 12 new apprentices
Datalec Precision Installations (DPI) has enrolled twelve new apprentices into its structured training programme, marking the second cohort since the scheme launched. The London-headquartered data centre contractor says the intake reflects continued growth in demand for installation and operational talent driven by cloud computing, AI infrastructure build-out and expanding digital services across the UK.
The apprentices will be deployed across seven business departments, working alongside experienced professionals on mission-critical projects. DPI says the programme combines on-the-job learning with industry-recognised qualifications and structured mentorship. The company also reported a 100% retention and completion rate across its previous cohort, with eleven apprentices currently employed, from eight roles created since the programme launched.

DPI's published figures reveal a slightly unusual arithmetic: twelve apprentices joining in 2026, eleven currently employed, and eight roles created since launch. The company has not clarified whether the figures reflect different counting periods or role classifications, and the discrepancy warrants editorial note. Regardless, the 100% completion rate is a credible headline metric in a sector where skills attrition is a persistent concern.
Industry partners Edmundson Electrical and Safety Signs contributed tools, personal protective equipment and uniforms for the new starters, though neither has made a financial commitment to the programme.

Talent pressure across the sector
The UK data centre sector is in the middle of a sustained capacity expansion, with planning approvals for large campuses accelerating in and around London and in regional markets including Manchester and Edinburgh. That growth is creating acute pressure on the pool of qualified M&E engineers, critical facilities technicians and connectivity specialists available for hire.
Industry bodies including the Data Centre Alliance and TechUK have repeatedly flagged workforce shortfall as a structural constraint on the sector's ability to meet demand. Apprenticeship frameworks supported by the UK Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education cover relevant pathways in electrical installation and engineering, though uptake across the broader contractor community remains uneven.
DPI's initiative sits within a wider pattern of data centre contractors and operators investing directly in pipeline development rather than relying on the open labour market. Larger operators including Equinix and Digital Realty have run apprenticeship or graduate schemes in the UK for several years, while specialist contractors have been slower to formalise such programmes.
For DPI, which positions itself as an end-to-end data centre solutions provider covering M&E design, modular build, installation and managed services, retaining apprentice talent through to qualified status represents both a cost and a competitive consideration. A contractor with demonstrable internal training capacity may have an advantage in winning framework agreements where client ESG criteria include social value and workforce development commitments.
The next milestone to watch will be whether DPI expands the programme size in 2027 and whether it formalises partnerships with further industry sponsors or further education colleges to increase throughput.
