POET Technologies targets 1m optical engines/month by end of 2027

The NASDAQ-listed photonics firm set out a production ramp, $50m capex deployment and over $100m in active customer pipeline at its 2026 AGM.

POET Technologies has used its 2026 Annual General Meeting to set out an ambitious production and commercial roadmap, with volume shipments of optical engines expected to begin in the second half of this year and capacity scaling to one million units per month by end-2027. The Toronto-headquartered photonics company, which designs optical modules and light-source products for AI infrastructure and hyperscale data centres, described the plan to shareholders during a virtual AGM held on 26 June.

Chairman and chief executive Suresh Venkatesan told shareholders and analysts that POET has more than ten active customer engagements with combined potential annual revenue exceeding $100 million. Named engagements include a recently announced agreement with Lumilens, a production order for 800G optical engines placed by an existing customer, and a non-recurring engineering agreement for External Light Source applications signed with a new, unnamed customer.

Capital deployment and supply chain

The production scale-up follows an unusually large equity raise: POET reported that it has taken in $830 million in equity capital over the past twelve months, with a further $661 million potentially accessible through outstanding warrants. An initial tranche of approximately $50 million is earmarked for capital equipment purchases in the second half of 2026. Venkatesan framed the strong balance sheet as a strategic tool, enabling the company to lock in long-term supply agreements for critical components and reduce exposure to materials shortages that have constrained competitors in photonics and optical networking.

The company also plans to grow its global headcount of 115 by roughly 50 staff within the next few months, adding manufacturing and engineering capacity across its sites in Singapore, Penang and Shenzhen.

Product roadmap and market context

POET's flagship external light source product, the Blazar hybrid laser, remains on schedule for deployment at scale in 2028. The device is designed to power high-bandwidth chip-to-chip and rack-to-rack interconnects inside AI server clusters, addressing a bottleneck that optical engineers describe as increasingly critical as GPU cluster densities rise and electrical interconnects approach their bandwidth ceilings.

The optical transceiver and silicon photonics market is intensely competitive. Established transceiver vendors such as Coherent, Lumentum and II-VI supply the bulk of current hyperscaler demand, while fabless silicon-photonics startups and in-house projects at large cloud providers are all pushing toward the same 800G-to-1.6T transition that POET is targeting. POET's differentiation rests on its Optical Interposer platform, a wafer-level integration technique the company holds as patented, which it says delivers lower cost, smaller form factor and better power efficiency than conventional co-packaged or discrete module approaches. Whether that advantage translates at production volumes will be tested as the company moves from development-stage engagements to volume purchase orders over the next 12 to 18 months.

The company's revenue projections sit against a broader surge in AI-driven data-centre capital spending, with hyperscalers publicly committing record infrastructure budgets for 2026 and 2027. Demand for high-bandwidth optical interconnects is expected to grow sharply as 400G infrastructure gives way to 800G and beyond, and as co-packaged optics begin to appear in next-generation switch and server designs. Regulatory tailwinds from US government efforts to secure domestic semiconductor and photonics supply chains could also benefit POET's North American and allied-country manufacturing footprint, though the company has not disclosed whether it is pursuing any federal procurement or supply-chain resilience programmes.

All board re-election resolutions passed at the AGM with at least 94.35% support, and Davidson & Company LLP was reappointed as auditor with 97% of votes cast.
