Lenovo names Dr. Rabeah Alzaidy to head Saudi Arabia R&D

Lenovo has appointed an AI researcher and former HUMAIN and Lucid Motors executive to lead its R&D operations in the Kingdom.

Lenovo has appointed Dr. Rabeah Alzaidy as head of its Research and Development operations in Saudi Arabia, the company announced on 25 August 2026. The hire, disclosed from Dubai, is framed as a direct extension of Lenovo's broader investment programme in the Kingdom, which already spans a regional headquarters in Riyadh, a manufacturing facility under construction, and an existing graduate talent programme run in partnership with the Human Resources Development Fund.

Dr. Alzaidy brings more than 15 years of experience across AI research, academia, and industry. She holds a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and completed postdoctoral research at both Penn State and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Prior roles include Assistant Professor of Computer Science at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, strategic project management at Saudi Aramco, and AI advisory work at the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) within SDAIA. Most recently she held leadership positions at Lucid Motors and AI firm HUMAIN. Her published research spans open-source Arabic large language models, AI-driven reservoir mapping for the energy sector, and mobility and industrial applications.

The appointment in context

Tareq Alangari, Senior Vice President and President of Lenovo's META region, said Dr. Alzaidy's combined track record across research, government, and industry made her "uniquely positioned to help build world-class R&D capabilities in the Kingdom." Lenovo CTO Tolga Kurtoglu added that the hire would deepen the company's contribution to Saudi Arabia's technology ambitions and extend its global Hybrid AI strategy into the region.

In her own statement, Dr. Alzaidy said the role presented "an opportunity to accelerate impactful AI and emerging technology research, support the next generation of innovators, and develop solutions that address real-world challenges across industries and communities." Lenovo did not disclose headcount targets for the Saudi R&D function, nor the budget allocated to it, nor a timeline for specific research outputs.

Market and regulatory landscape

The appointment lands against a well-funded backdrop. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme has positioned the Kingdom as a regional technology hub, with the Public Investment Fund and state-linked entities committing significant capital to AI, cloud infrastructure, and semiconductor ambitions. HUMAIN, where Dr. Alzaidy previously worked, is a PIF-backed AI company formed in 2025 with a mandate to develop and deploy AI capabilities across the region; her move to Lenovo signals the degree to which multinational technology vendors are now competing for talent that has direct visibility into Saudi government AI priorities.

Lenovo is not alone in building local R&D presence in the Gulf. A number of global technology companies, including hyperscalers and enterprise software vendors, have established research or innovation centres in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi in recent years, partly to satisfy in-country value requirements attached to large government procurement contracts and partly to access sovereign AI funding pools. Saudi Arabia's SDAIA continues to develop a national AI governance framework, and vendors with established local research operations are generally better placed to influence and comply with emerging domestic AI standards.

For Lenovo, the Saudi R&D function fits its stated Hybrid AI strategy, which positions the company as a full-stack provider spanning personal devices, enterprise infrastructure, and AI software. Whether the Kingdom becomes a meaningful origination point for globally exported AI research, rather than a localisation and adaptation hub, will depend on the talent pipeline Dr. Alzaidy is able to build in collaboration with KAUST, KFUPM, and other local university partners.
