Mara raises $7m pre-seed to deploy counter-swarm drone platform
Mara, a San Francisco-based defence hardware startup, has closed a $7 million pre-seed round to accelerate deployment of Spike, its automated counter-UAS platform designed to intercept small first-person-view (FPV) drones. Khosla Ventures led the raise, with participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund and Indicator Fund, alongside individual angel investors.
The company was founded in October 2024 by Daniel Kofman and Sriram Raghu, who previously co-founded Optivolt, a solar-panel startup that shipped hardware to Anduril, the US Air Force and Ukraine. Mara's stated rationale is that the counter-UAS industry was built around large, high-altitude threats and has not kept pace with the proliferation of cheap, manoeuvrable FPV drones operating in swarms at low altitude.
How Spike works
Spike consists of two modular components. Spotter, the targeting unit, fuses electro-optical, acoustic and optional low-signature radar sensors with onboard AI to provide day, night and all-weather detection. Seeker, the interceptor, is a 250-gram tube-launched drone capable of 200 km/h, with onboard guidance that allows it to close on a target autonomously once cued by Spotter. A human operator sets rules of engagement and retains the ability to abort launches, keeping the system within a human-on-the-loop framework rather than fully autonomous lethal action.
Kofman described the design philosophy as deliberately distributed. "Most defences still concentrate both replacement cost and line of fire," he said. "Spike instead creates a distributed mesh of small, cheap nodes that can each aim and shoot in multiple directions at once."
The system is designed to be configurable across mission profiles: a rucksack-portable variant for dismounted infantry, a vehicle-mounted version for convoy protection and a multi-node perimeter deployment for fixed sites such as military bases, power plants or large public events.
Field testing has produced a series of verified milestones. Seeker completed intercepts integrated with US Army software at a Texas exercise, while Spotter operated autonomously on an armoured vehicle during an Army exercise in Europe. In July 2026, Ukrainian forces used Spotter 40 kilometres from the front line to track multiple FPV drones. Mara has also begun a civilian pilot at a South Korean port, reflecting an intention to address non-military infrastructure-protection use cases alongside combat deployment.
Market context and competitive positioning
The counter-UAS sector has attracted significant government and private capital since the widespread operational use of FPV drones in the Ukraine conflict demonstrated their lethality against high-value assets. Established players including Dedrone (owned by Axon), DroneShield and Anduril's Pulsar platform have focused primarily on electronic warfare approaches: radio-frequency jamming, GPS spoofing and signal detection. Those methods face a structural limitation that Mara's pitch addresses directly: fibre-optic guided and onboard-AI-guided FPV drones are substantially harder to jam.
Kinetic interception at the scale and cost Mara is targeting represents a less crowded segment, though programmes such as the US Army's Indirect Fire Protection Capability and DARPA's ANCM initiative are pursuing overlapping objectives with larger system footprints and higher per-unit costs. Mara's positioning as a low-cost, attritable system, where losing interceptors in action is acceptable by design, differentiates it from approaches that rely on reusable or expensive effectors.
Nicole Fraenkel, partner at Khosla Ventures, said Mara was "building counter-drone autonomy with a system cost that's orders of magnitude lower than anything else we've seen." That claim remains unverified against publicly available competitor pricing, but the direction of travel in defence procurement, particularly among NATO allies, is toward affordable, mass-producible autonomous systems rather than high-unit-cost platforms.
Mara holds cooperative research agreements with three US defence organisations, has been selected for NATO's DIANA innovation accelerator and is in early engagement with partners in the UK, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Ground-mounted Spike deployments are targeted for before the end of 2026, with vehicle-mounted and man-portable variants planned for 2027.
