Patton and alfanar to modernise Saudi smart-grid cybersecurity

US industrial networking firm Patton has signed a strategic cooperation deal with Saudi multinational alfanar to secure and digitise the Kingdom's electrical substation

Patton LLC, a Gaithersburg, Maryland-based developer of industrial networking and cybersecurity technologies, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with alfanar, a Saudi-headquartered multinational operating across energy, infrastructure and digital solutions. The partnership targets the modernisation of operational technology (OT) and IT networks underpinning electrical substations, smart-grid infrastructure and critical energy operations across Saudi Arabia.

The deal will be delivered through alfanar Digital Solutions and alfanar eDAS, the company's digital automation and solutions arm. The scope covers industrial automation, digital substation deployment, grid cybersecurity, network segmentation, SCADA policy enforcement and resilient substation automation aligned with Industry 4.0 and IIoT frameworks.

The technologies

Three Patton product lines are central to the agreement. The ConnectIT CIT-SFP is a compact serial-to-IP gateway that allows legacy remote terminal units, protection relays and intelligent electronic devices to connect to modern Ethernet/IP networks without requiring replacement of installed field assets. The CopperLink CL-SFP extends Ethernet connectivity over existing copper cabling, reducing the cost of IP-based communications rollouts. The FiberPlex SFX Data Diode SFP modules provide hardware-enforced unidirectional data transfer, permitting operational systems to push data to monitoring platforms while physically blocking inbound access from external networks.

Patton's Special Projects Group will also be available to alfanar for contract development, engineering and manufacturing of customised solutions as Saudi grid infrastructure requirements evolve.

Burton Patton, Chief Revenue Officer of Patton LLC, said the company intended to "contribute our products, IP competency, and engineering capabilities to support secure digital transformation across the Kingdom's energy sectors." Chadi Iskandar, Vice President of eDAS at alfanar, described the agreement as bringing together "complementary capabilities essential to the future of intelligent energy systems."

Market context

Saudi Arabia's grid modernisation ambitions sit squarely within Vision 2030, the Kingdom's economic diversification programme. The energy sector is a priority vertical: state utility Saudi Electricity Company has been expanding its smart-meter estate and substation automation programmes, and a broader push toward renewable integration is increasing the complexity and cyber-attack surface of transmission and distribution networks.

OT cybersecurity for critical national infrastructure is a rapidly expanding segment globally. The convergence of IT and OT networks in power utilities has drawn sustained attention from threat actors, as demonstrated by a string of incidents targeting industrial control systems in Europe and the Middle East over the past several years. Hardware-enforced data diodes, of the type Patton supplies, have become a recommended control in frameworks such as IEC 62443, which governs industrial communication network security, and are referenced in guidance from NERC CIP in North America. Whether Saudi regulators will mandate comparable standards formally remains an open question, but grid operators are increasingly adopting them voluntarily.

The partnership enters a market where several well-funded European and US vendors, including Fortinet, Claroty and Nozomi Networks, are competing for OT security contracts across Gulf Cooperation Council utilities. Patton's differentiation here appears to rest on hardware-level connectivity products that bridge legacy field devices to IP infrastructure, rather than pure-play security monitoring.

The release notes that the announcement coincides with broader US-Saudi commercial engagement, including the recently signed US-Saudi 123 Agreement on Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation, though the Patton-alfanar deal has no connection to nuclear technology. No contract value, implementation timeline or named customer projects were disclosed.
