Bitdeer pays $100m for 200-acre Texas site to build AI/HPC capacity
Bitdeer Technologies Group (NASDAQ: BTDR) has completed a $100 million all-cash, fee-simple acquisition of approximately 200 acres of greenfield land in Milam County, Texas, adjacent to its existing Rockdale facility. The purchase gives the Singapore-headquartered company direct ownership of a strategically located site it intends to develop for AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.
The Rockdale campus, located within 70 miles of Austin, currently holds approximately 563 MW of interconnected grid capacity. Bitdeer says its development plans are expected to scale that figure to 742 MW, and the site benefits from a dedicated water supply and established substation infrastructure. Following the deal, the company's total pipeline power capacity in Milam County stands at approximately 742 MW, and its global portfolio spans roughly 3.0 GW across facilities in the United States, Norway, Bhutan, Canada, Malaysia and Ethiopia.
The deal
Michael G. Potter, Bitdeer's chief financial officer, said the acquisition removes what the company characterised as one of the principal constraints on AI data centre development at the location. "Owning this land gives us greater long-term certainty over our development plans, eliminates the renewal risk associated with a lease, and provides flexibility to maintain our existing Bitcoin mining operations while we develop the newly acquired property," Potter said.
The company said it believes Rockdale is well positioned to receive further power allocations in the coming years, citing the existing large-load interconnection and the transmission and substation infrastructure already serving the site. No timetable for construction commencement or capital expenditure beyond the land purchase was disclosed.
Market context
Bitdeer's move is part of a broader trend of compute-infrastructure operators securing land and power capacity ahead of demand, as hyperscalers, AI model developers and enterprise customers compete for colocation and build-to-suit contracts. Texas has emerged as one of the most active US markets for data centre development, owing to its deregulated electricity market, available land and relative proximity to the southern US technology corridor.
The transition from Bitcoin mining to AI and HPC hosting has become a recurring strategic pivot for companies in the digital-asset infrastructure space. Large-scale mining facilities, which share meaningful characteristics with AI data centres, high power density, robust cooling, grid-scale interconnection, are being repositioned or expanded to attract GPU compute workloads. Bitdeer's Rockdale campus is not alone in this regard; several peers have announced similar pivots as AI inference demand outpaces mining economics during periods of compressed Bitcoin margins.
The Texas grid operator ERCOT has faced scrutiny over large-load interconnection queues, and new entrants seeking multi-hundred-megawatt connections can face multi-year waits. Bitdeer's argument that its existing interconnection gives it an advantage over greenfield competitors is therefore commercially credible, though the timeline for additional power allocations remains subject to grid-planning decisions outside the company's control.
Regulatory and standards read-across
Bitdeer's AI data centre ambitions will draw it further into the regulatory environment governing US-based compute infrastructure. The US Department of Commerce has signalled ongoing interest in the provenance and security of AI compute capacity, and AI-infrastructure operators of significant scale may face enhanced scrutiny under future executive orders or legislation. The company's dual focus on Bitcoin mining and AI hosting may also attract regulatory attention as policymakers examine energy consumption in both sectors.
The land acquisition provides the site control Bitdeer needs to attract project-finance lenders and anchor tenants, both of which typically require long-term ownership certainty before committing capital. Named customers and financing structures for the AI build-out will be the key near-term milestones for investors tracking progress at Rockdale.
