Micron names Deirdre Hanford to head new Research Labs division

Micron has appointed the 37-year Synopsys veteran to lead its $10bn long-horizon memory and AI research institution.

Micron Technology has appointed Deirdre Hanford as corporate vice president and president of Micron Research Labs, the semiconductor memory giant's newly established long-horizon research institution. Hanford takes the role following what the company described as a comprehensive external search, and her appointment signals that Micron Research Labs is transitioning from the announcement phase into active build-out.

Micron Research Labs was unveiled in August 2026 and is backed by a planned $10 billion investment over ten years. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, it operates across research sites in the US, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan, with a remit spanning memory process technologies, future memory and compute architectures, advanced packaging and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. Micron has framed the Labs as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the United States, positioning it as a cornerstone of the company's broader US investment plan, which the company says will exceed $250 billion in manufacturing and R&D and is expected to create 90,000 American jobs.

Hanford's background

Hanford spent 37 years at Synopsys, where she held senior roles including chief security officer, co-general manager of the Design Group, and executive vice president of customer engagement, helping to scale the company into a major force in electronic design automation and semiconductor IP. Most recently she has been advising organisations across semiconductors, EDA, national defence and AI, and previously led a national effort to strengthen US semiconductor research and workforce development.

Her board affiliations include the UC Berkeley College of Engineering Advisory Board and the MIT School of Engineering Dean's Advisory Council, as well as the SEMI Board of Industry Leaders. She received the 2025 IEEE Frederik Philips Award for leadership in EDA for secure and energy-efficient microelectronics, a recognition that underscores her public-private collaboration credentials, which Micron regards as central to the Labs' mission.

Scott DeBoer, Micron's president and chief technology and products officer, said Hanford "combines deep semiconductor industry expertise with a proven ability to build partnerships, inspire collaboration and turn ambitious ideas into lasting impact." Hanford will report into DeBoer's Innovation, Technology and Products leadership team.

Market context

The appointment arrives at an inflection point for the US semiconductor research landscape. The CHIPS and Science Act, signed in 2022, earmarked billions of dollars for domestic semiconductor R&D, prompting a wave of corporate commitments to long-term foundational research alongside manufacturing expansion. Memory in particular has become strategically significant: high-bandwidth memory (HBM) supply has been a recurring constraint on AI accelerator deployment, drawing intense interest from hyperscalers, GPU makers and governments alike.

Micron competes in DRAM and NAND against Samsung and SK Hynix, both of which operate substantial dedicated research establishments in South Korea with deep links to government funding. By establishing a research institution with a ten-year investment horizon and explicit partnerships with universities and national labs, Micron is signalling a longer-term ambition to influence the trajectory of memory and compute architecture rather than simply optimise within existing technology nodes.

Hanford will be charged with defining the Labs' research agenda and establishing its operating model, partnerships and institutional relationships. Near-term milestones that investors and industry observers will track include the naming of anchor academic partners, the first published research outputs, and how the Labs interfaces with Micron's product roadmap teams as the $10 billion commitment begins to deploy.
