ST launches VD56GA image sensor for in-cabin monitoring

STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a 1.1-megapixel automotive image sensor designed to bring driver and occupant monitoring (DOM) technology to mainstream vehicle lines at lower system cost. Samples are available now, with pricing and procurement handled through local ST sales offices.

The VD56GA is built around ST's new backside-illuminated pixel architecture, branded ST DeepNIR, which is optimised for near-infrared imaging. Compared with its predecessor, ST claims 35% higher modulation transfer function (MTF) sharpness and nearly 60% greater quantum efficiency in infrared conditions. The company says those gains allow camera module designers to use lower-cost optics, simpler infrared illumination setups and less demanding optical filtering, removing the need for external image-processing silicon and simplifying overall module design.

The device

The sensor ships in a compact 3.7 mm x 3.2 mm chip-scale package, suited to space-constrained in-cabin installations. Embedded processing functions include auto exposure, mirror, crop, dark calibration and piecewise-linear processing. The device supports both RAW and YUV output formats, giving system integrators flexibility across different electronic control unit architectures and software stacks.

Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, said the design intent was squarely on "system-level tradeoffs that matter most: image quality in infrared conditions, compact integration, and a cost structure that supports high-volume programs." He also noted that front-end manufacturing at ST's Crolles, France facility is intended to give automotive customers greater supply-chain resilience, a point that carries weight given ongoing geopolitical sensitivity around semiconductor sourcing.

ST separately noted that it shipped its 10 millionth SafeSense automotive image sensor earlier in 2026, signalling established volume production rather than a first-generation bet.

Market context

Analyst firm Yole Group estimates that DOM deployment volumes will exceed 70 million units by 2031, driven by regulatory mandates and broader safety feature adoption across mid-range and entry-level vehicle segments. European General Safety Regulation requirements have already made driver monitoring systems compulsory in new vehicle types sold in the EU from mid-2024, and similar requirements are advancing in other markets, which is expanding the addressable opportunity well beyond premium trim levels.

The in-cabin imaging sensor market features competition from Sony's automotive IMX series, Omnivision's automotive-grade offerings, and a number of smaller specialists. ST's integrated device manufacturer model, with front-end production in France, differentiates its supply proposition at a time when Tier 1 automotive suppliers and OEMs are actively diversifying away from single-region semiconductor dependencies. The company's established automotive qualification and long production lifecycle commitments are also meaningful factors for programmes that span five to ten years of vehicle production.

ST has not disclosed unit pricing, nor named any specific OEM or Tier 1 design win for the VD56GA. The company's next milestones to watch will be confirmation of a production ramp schedule and any named platform adoption from a major vehicle manufacturer.
