Aina raises $5.5m seed to build AI-era hardware interface

The San Francisco and Bangalore startup is developing a general-purpose AI interface beyond touchscreens and keyboards, backed by Redstart Labs and 360 ONE Asset.

Aina, a consumer hardware startup founded in May 2025, has closed a $5.5 million seed round to bring a general-purpose AI interface to market. The round was co-led by Redstart Labs (backed by Infoedge, India) and 360 ONE Asset, with participation from MIXI Global Investments, Antler, Blume Founders Fund and a roster of angel investors including Kunal Shah (WhatsApp/Cred), Tikhon Bernstam (Scribd), Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar (Razorpay), and Vaibhav Domkundwar of Better Capital.

The company, which has been operating under the research project name "Project Mirage", is opening a waitlist for a pilot of its flagship interface. The product itself remains under wraps: Aina has not disclosed form factor, price point or release date.

From experiment to product

Aina was founded by Apoorv Shankar, formerly VP of Hardware at wearables firm Ultrahuman. The company showcased three experimental AI interfaces at CES 2026 targeting everyday tasks such as online meetings, ride booking and food ordering. In April 2026, it commercially released Dune, a context-aware three-key keypad for Mac that adapts its function to whichever application is in the foreground. Hundreds of Dune units have shipped to early adopters, giving the team a working dataset on real-world AI adoption patterns.

Shankar framed the company's thesis around reducing cognitive load as AI agents take on more execution. "As intelligence gets commoditised, AI assistants will get better at understanding context and knowing what you need, and agents will execute on your behalf," he said. "The missing piece today is this context-aware layer paired with an easier way to capture human choice."

Market context

The human-computer interaction category is attracting renewed interest as large-language-model capabilities outpace the interfaces through which most people access them. A wave of AI-native hardware attempts has already produced mixed results: Humane's AI Pin launched to critical reviews in 2024 before the company sold its software assets to HP, and the Rabbit R1 device attracted early buzz before disappointing users with limited functionality. Both products struggled to define a compelling use case that justified dedicated hardware over a smartphone app.

Aina's positioning, centred on a peripheral-style approval layer rather than a standalone device, may avoid some of the standalone-device risk. Its Dune keypad occupies the same accessory category as programmable macro pads from firms such as Elgato, but with AI-driven context awareness as the differentiator.

Investor Abhishek Nag of 360 ONE Asset noted the historical pattern: "Every leap in computing has demanded a new hardware interface, from punch cards to the GUI to the smartphone." Vibhore Sharma of Redstart Labs pointed to a deeper structural question: "One of the key questions that matter is how the relationship changes when software starts to understand context and the interface disappears."

Standards and regulatory read-across

Consumer AI hardware that captures continuous context faces growing scrutiny under data-protection frameworks. In Europe, always-on or ambient input devices are subject to GDPR requirements around purpose limitation and data minimisation, and the EU AI Act's provisions on prohibited manipulation and transparency will apply to consumer-facing AI systems as they phase in from 2026. For a company targeting a global consumer audience, compliance architecture will need to be addressed well before a commercial launch.

Aina employs 35 people across San Francisco and Bangalore. The waitlist is live at aina.com, and the company will be watched closely for a hardware reveal that substantiates its broad thesis about post-touchscreen interaction.
