EMERGING and Promethean launch $300m AI hospitality fund
EMERGING and Promethean have jointly launched The Experience Fund (XPR), a $300 million vehicle co-sponsored equally by the two firms, targeting artificial intelligence, automation platforms and intellectual property companies built for the hospitality and experiential entertainment sectors. The fund carries a $500 million hard cap, and is led by EMERGING Managing Partner Mathew Focht and Promethean Managing Partner Michael Burt.
The fund formalises a six-year working relationship between the two organisations. EMERGING contributes deal origination and operational expertise, while Promethean brings more than two decades of institutional private equity structuring and capital deployment in consumer, retail and services businesses.
The investment thesis
XPR is focused on what the sponsors describe as the intelligence layer of the experience economy: the AI, automation and data infrastructure that sits beneath consumer-facing hospitality brands. Target categories include order and beverage automation, computer vision, autonomous service, labour and supply-chain intelligence, and gaming intellectual property.
The commercial rationale is grounded in sector scale. The US restaurant and foodservice industry employs roughly 15.7 million people, representing approximately 10 per cent of the private-sector workforce. Yet the sector runs on single-digit margins, annual staff turnover of 35 to 40 per cent, and heavily manual operational processes. Focht argued that these structural weaknesses, combined with limited incumbent technology debt, make hospitality an unusually open target for automation. "Hospitality has enormous scale and very little legacy technology to defend, which is a rare combination," he said. "The winners won't be the flashiest consumer app. They'll be the AI platforms that take cost, labor friction and guesswork out of every location."
A notable distribution advantage underpins the fund's deal-flow strategy. EMERGING has an existing relationship with Buyers Edge Platform, described in the release as the largest food and beverage GPO in the US, working with close to one in three US restaurants. John Davie, a general partner at EMERGING, serves as chief executive of Buyers Edge Platform. That relationship is positioned as a built-in route to market for portfolio companies, providing access to tens of thousands of operators from day one.
EMERGING's existing portfolio includes social entertainment concepts such as F1 Arcade, Flight Club US and Batbox, alongside technology platforms including Botrista and Serve.
Market context and competitive landscape
The broader hospitality technology market has attracted significant venture and private equity attention over the past three years, as labour shortages and rising input costs pressured operators to automate. Point-of-sale modernisation, kitchen display systems, AI-driven demand forecasting and robotic beverage dispensing have each generated dedicated funding rounds. The XPR thesis positions the fund at the infrastructure layer rather than the consumer-experience layer, a distinction that increasingly separates institutional investors from early-stage venture.
The fund's dual US and UK sponsorship structure, with Promethean operating across both markets, signals an intent to source deals internationally, though the release does not specify a geographic split for deployment.
Regulatory considerations are relatively limited compared with enterprise software or fintech, but AI-driven labour tools in the US face growing scrutiny around algorithmic scheduling, worker monitoring and displacement disclosures, particularly in cities with established hospitality-sector union representation. Portfolio companies deploying computer vision or autonomous service in EU markets will also need to navigate requirements under the EU AI Act as its provisions for high-risk and general-purpose systems continue to phase in through 2027.
XPR has not disclosed an initial close date, a target first-investment timeline, or whether anchor limited partners have already committed capital.
