Smartling joins OpenAI Select Network and launches ChatGPT plugin
Smartling, the New York-based enterprise translation platform, has been designated an OpenAI Select Partner within the OpenAI Partner Network, and has simultaneously launched a native plugin for ChatGPT. The plugin is listed in OpenAI's plugin directory and makes Smartling's full linguistic infrastructure available without leaving a ChatGPT conversation.
The plugin allows users to translate text against their own glossary, style guide and terminology, search and manage translation jobs, raise or resolve quality issues between reviewers and linguists, and pull word count and workflow reports. The company says the integration is aimed at any department that handles multilingual content, not only dedicated localisation teams.
What the partnership covers
As an OpenAI Select Partner, Smartling said it will continue deepening its use of OpenAI models across its LanguageAI platform, specifically applying GPT-5.6 to improve translation quality, automation, and multilingual workflow throughput. The Select tier is positioned by OpenAI as a recognition of partners with significant delivery capabilities and established enterprise customer relationships.
Bryan Murphy, chief executive of Smartling, said the combination brings "OpenAI's frontier AI and Smartling's expertise" together to help companies "dramatically accelerate how they enter markets, reach customers, and grow around the world." The release includes two named customer metrics: Marriott International expanded its training-content language coverage from 7 to 38 languages while reducing translation costs by 40%, and Pinterest reached 100 million users across 31 languages with an 83% reduction in time-to-market.
Market context
The enterprise localisation and translation-management sector has become a focal point for AI investment as large language models make automated translation significantly more capable. Smartling competes against a field that includes RWS, TransPerfect, Phrase (formerly Memsource), and Lokalise, as well as homegrown localisation pipelines that enterprises are increasingly building directly on top of hyperscaler LLM APIs.
The ChatGPT plugin route is a distribution strategy worth noting. Embedding enterprise SaaS capabilities inside a conversational AI interface reduces switching friction and expands the addressable user base beyond specialist localisation managers to content, marketing, and support teams who already use ChatGPT in their daily workflows. Several enterprise SaaS vendors are pursuing similar approaches as OpenAI's plugin ecosystem matures.
Regulatory and quality considerations
Enterprise translation at scale carries governance obligations that commodity AI translation does not. Regulated industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals, and legal services require auditable workflows, traceable terminology decisions, and human review for certain content categories. Smartling's positioning of its quality controls and oversight infrastructure as compatible with AI-speed delivery is directly aimed at these buyers, for whom raw LLM output without governance tooling would be insufficient for compliance purposes.
The EU AI Act's transparency requirements for AI-assisted content, and evolving guidance from standards bodies on AI use in professional translation, are likely to make auditability a commercial differentiator over the next two to three years. Smartling's governance layer could prove a durable advantage in regulated verticals, provided it continues to demonstrate traceability as model versions change.
