IQM Quantum Computers posts first public earnings with EUR 102m backlog

The Nasdaq-listed Finnish quantum firm reported H1 2026 revenues of EUR 8.9m and initiated full-year guidance of EUR 42m to EUR 47m.

IQM Quantum Computers (Nasdaq: IQMX) has reported its first set of results as a publicly listed company, posting revenues of EUR 8.9 million for the six months ended 30 June 2026 against an operating loss of EUR 60.5 million. The Espoo-based superconducting quantum-computing vendor, which completed a dual listing on Nasdaq earlier this year, said its total order backlog had grown to EUR 102.1 million as of 3 August 2026, up from EUR 69.1 million at the half-year close.

The company initiated full-year 2026 guidance of EUR 42 million to EUR 47 million in revenue and new order intake of between EUR 65 million and EUR 75 million. Chief financial officer Jan Kuerschner said a cash balance of EUR 309.4 million, inclusive of listing proceeds, gives the business financial runway into the second quarter of 2028. IQM said it intends to deploy that capital into expanding its internal manufacturing fab, doubling cleanroom capacity to enable production of up to 30 full-stack quantum systems per year.

Commercial milestones

Operationally, IQM reported 26 systems sold and 17 delivered since its founding in 2018, with the first US delivery made to the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee in June 2026. The company also announced a deal with CSC to integrate a quantum computer into the LUMI AI Factory, connected to one of Europe's leading supercomputers, and disclosed an applied use-case collaboration with Deutsche Bahn involving hybrid quantum-classical railway scheduling on live operational data. Market expansion into Japan and Spain was cited alongside partnerships with NVIDIA, covering AI-driven qubit calibration, and with HPE for integration into Cray HPC environments.

Chief executive Jan Goetz framed the listing as a transition point: "IQM is operating from a position of verified commercial scale with 26 full-stack quantum computers sold, 17 delivered globally, and proven integration directly alongside AI supercomputers and high-performance data centres."

Market context and competitive landscape

IQM occupies a distinct position among European quantum hardware vendors as the continent's first Nasdaq-listed quantum computing company. Its superconducting architecture places it in direct competition with IBM, Google and Rigetti, all of which have considerably larger installed bases and longer public-company track records. The on-premises deployment model IQM favours differentiates it from cloud-first competitors, and appears well suited to sovereign-compute procurement, where governments and national laboratories prefer direct infrastructure ownership over shared cloud access.

The broader quantum hardware market remains pre-profitability across virtually all independent vendors. The gap between backlog growth and revenue recognition reflects long sales and integration cycles typical of the sector, and IQM's EUR 60.5 million operating loss for the half year underlines the capital intensity of building and delivering full-stack systems at scale. Investors will be monitoring the pace at which backlog converts to recognised revenue, and whether the new manufacturing capacity translates into faster delivery timelines.

On the technology side, IQM disclosed progress on error correction, including the development of novel "barbell codes," a variant of qLDPC codes adapted to the company's Constellation topology. While technical details were limited in the release, advances in error correction are widely considered the critical path to fault-tolerant quantum computing, the threshold at which the technology becomes useful for a materially broader set of commercial applications. The company's full-year guidance and growing institutional partnerships suggest cautious optimism from both management and early customers, though the path to sustained profitability remains long and the competitive field is well capitalised.
