Micron opens 60,000 sq ft Boise training centre to build chip workforce
Micron Technology has opened a 60,000-square-foot Micron Training Centre (MTC) in Boise, Idaho, designed to accelerate the skilled labour pipeline for its domestic semiconductor manufacturing operations. The facility, which sits near Micron's existing Boise campus, combines an intensive onboarding programme for new hires with formal academic pathways for college students and career changers.
The centre houses up to 20 semiconductor process tools that replicate live fab conditions, supplied by a consortium of equipment vendors including Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, Kokusai Electric and SCREEN. The hands-on configuration means trainees use the same machinery they will operate on the production floor, reducing the ramp time that typically accompanies new-hire onboarding in high-volume memory manufacturing.
Funding and academic partnerships
Micron and the US Department of Commerce have committed $3 million to the College of Western Idaho (CWI) to cover educator pay, equipment and classroom space. From this autumn, CWI will deliver its Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology programmes at the MTC alongside its existing Nampa campus. The facility also becomes the anchor site for the technical instruction component of Micron's Registered Apprenticeship Program, which celebrated its sixth cohort at the opening event, described as the largest Boise cohort to date. The company is targeting triple-digit enrolment by the end of fiscal year 2027.
"The Micron Training Center is a strategic investment in workforce development, helping build the skilled talent needed to support advanced manufacturing and sustain US leadership in semiconductor innovation," said April Arnzen, executive vice president and chief people officer at Micron.
The apprenticeship model was developed in collaboration with CWI and the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance and is structured around an earn-and-learn format, aligning with Idaho Governor Brad Little's publicly stated goal to double the state's registered apprentices by 2029.
Broader CHIPS Act context
The Boise centre sits within Micron's stated commitment to invest more than $250 billion in US semiconductor manufacturing over the coming decade, a programme the company says is expected to create more than 90,000 American jobs. Federal support for the facility reflects the workforce-development obligations baked into CHIPS and Science Act grant agreements: recipients of CHIPS Programme Office funding are required to demonstrate credible plans to recruit and train domestic workers at scale, making training infrastructure a compliance requirement as much as a competitive choice.
The workforce challenge is sector-wide. The US Semiconductor Industry Association has previously estimated that the domestic chip industry could face a shortfall of tens of thousands of engineers and technicians by the end of the decade as new fabs in Arizona, Ohio, Texas and Idaho come online. Initiatives that co-locate process equipment with community college curricula are increasingly seen as the most effective near-term response, since they compress the gap between theoretical instruction and production-ready competence.
Micron's equipment-vendor consortium model is worth noting as a structural approach: by inviting Applied Materials, Lam Research and others to use the MTC for their own customer and staff training, Micron creates a shared facility that offsets some operational costs while deepening supplier relationships. It is an arrangement a number of leading-edge foundries have explored in Asia but that remains relatively uncommon among US memory manufacturers.
The MTC opens as Micron prepares to scale high-bandwidth memory production to support AI accelerator demand, a product cycle that places acute pressure on yield and therefore on technician quality. The next milestones to watch are the FY2027 enrolment figures and any announcement of similar facilities tied to Micron's planned fab expansions outside Idaho.
