Boston Limited and Cloudian ally on sovereign AI storage for Europe

Boston Limited and Cloudian are partnering to deliver on-premises, exabyte-scale S3 storage for European AI and HPC workloads with full data sovereignty.

Boston Limited, the UK-based IT infrastructure specialist, has formed a strategic partnership with US object storage vendor Cloudian to bring sovereign AI and high-performance computing storage to organisations across Europe and the broader EMEA region. The alliance adds Cloudian's HyperStore and HyperScale AI Data Platform to Boston's existing AI and HPC portfolio, with a focus on on-premises and air-gapped deployments that keep data inside the customer's own jurisdiction.

The announcement reflects a wider shift in enterprise AI procurement, as organisations move from experimentation into production and find that the data volumes required for training, fine-tuning, inference, and retrieval-augmented generation pipelines rapidly outgrow legacy storage architectures. Boston and Cloudian say the combined offering addresses both the performance and the regulatory dimensions of that transition in a single integrated solution.

The deal

At the technical level, the partnership centres on Cloudian HyperStore, an S3-compatible object storage platform that the companies say can scale non-disruptively to exabyte capacity across single or multi-site deployments managed as one logical system. HyperStore carries NVIDIA-Certified Storage designation, meaning it has been validated against real AI workloads including training, fine-tuning, inference, KV-cache operations and RAG pipelines in GPU-accelerated environments. Customers will also gain access to Boston Labs, the company's in-house architecture and benchmarking facility, where solutions can be tested against live workloads before full deployment.

Manoj Nayee, Managing Director of Boston Limited, said the partnership allows organisations to "move from proof of concept to production with confidence in both the performance and the provenance of their data." Carsten Graf, VP Sales EMEA at Cloudian, argued that the alliance makes "sovereign, scalable storage a reality for the organisations building the future of AI."

Security features cited in the release include encryption, secure multi-tenancy, identity and access management, and object-lock mechanisms. Air-gapped deployment options are presented as enabling public sector, financial services, healthcare, and defence customers to meet strict data-residency requirements.

Market context and regulatory read-across

Data sovereignty has moved from a niche compliance concern to a mainstream infrastructure procurement criterion, driven by a combination of factors. The EU AI Act, now in phased enforcement, imposes obligations on developers and deployers of general-purpose AI models and high-risk AI systems that touch on data provenance and auditability. GDPR continues to constrain cross-border transfers of personal data, and a number of EU member-state regulators have issued guidance tightening expectations for public-sector cloud and AI deployments specifically.

The sovereign cloud and sovereign AI storage category is becoming crowded. Hyperscalers including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud have launched dedicated sovereign cloud regions or confidential-computing zones aimed at European public-sector buyers, and European-born alternatives such as OVHcloud and Deutsche Telekom's Open Telekom Cloud are positioning on exactly the same data-residency argument. Pure-play S3-compatible object storage vendors, including Scality and MinIO alongside Cloudian, compete for on-premises workloads where customers want S3 API compatibility without a cloud dependency.

Boston's differentiator in this landscape is its engineering-led co-design model and the Boston Labs testing environment, which reduces deployment risk for large-scale HPC and AI builds. Its 30-year heritage in custom infrastructure and presence across more than 40 countries gives it distribution reach that a pure software vendor would need to replicate through a reseller network. Whether that proposition is sufficient to displace incumbent storage relationships at large European enterprises will depend on how aggressively the partnership is supported with reference architectures and named customer wins.

No contract values, pipeline targets, or launch customers were disclosed in the announcement. The absence of those details makes it difficult to assess the commercial scale of the alliance at this stage, though the regulatory tailwind behind European data sovereignty is real and growing.
